Winter brings frequent IFR conditions. The Long Island Sound creates its own microclimate with sudden visibility changes. Northeast winds can bring persistent low ceilings to both ends of the route.

Departing JFK's Class B requires ATC coordination. The route passes through or near the New York Class B, Bridgeport Class C, New Haven airspace, Providence Class C, and Boston Class B. VFR traffic typically routes along the Connecticut coastline to stay clear of the Bravo. Boston's Class B is complex with multiple shelves over the harbor approach.
