The California coast enjoys generally excellent VFR conditions, but marine layer fog is a persistent threat, especially from May through August (June Gloom). The fog typically burns off by midday inland but can persist along the coast all day. Santa Ana winds in fall can create exceptionally clear but turbulent conditions. The Central Coast is usually clear when both ends are foggy.

Departing LAX's Class B is complex. The route passes through or near the LA Class B, Santa Barbara Class C, San Luis Obispo area, and enters the SFO Class B for arrival. The Central Coast segment between SBA and Monterey is relatively open Class E. Watch for military airspace around Vandenberg SFB and Point Mugu.
